Bob Barabe Memorial TT 2017

posted May 25, 2017, 2:04 PM by Big Ring Flyers   [ updated May 25, 2017, 2:05 PM ]

As many of you already know, we only had 25 riders for the Bob Barabe Memorial Time Trial this past weekend. Of those 25, 8 were club members. In 2016, we had 73 riders and 21 of those were club members. Obviously, the weather was the biggest factor, but we were also scheduled on the same day as the Almanzo 100. 2016 was one of the best weather years ever and this year was one of the worst. Even still, we need to get more riders there, both club and non-club.

You can see the results here Results

We are planning on hosting an other TT this fall, stay tuned for deals.

As the weather cools off, the BRF Race efforts are heating up.

On Saturday, Andy, Brian H, new guy Brian Sprague and I represented the BRF at Donkey Cross near St. Croix Falls. New guy Brian spent the day racing, drinking Barley John's, (handing me Barley John's during the race) taking videos and heckling us all. Brian lined up about 51th in the 3/4 race and shredded the field, finishing in 10th place in the 3/4 race and 21st overall. Way to go Brian! (I'll get his intro out soon, he's been riding with us on Tuesday nights and is going to be a great addition to our racing efforts)

On Sunday, Thomas, Troy and Chris Stindt took a shot at the Filthy 50 gravel race. Thomas was the class of the field, finishing 15th overall (out of 800) and 1ST PLACE FAT BIKE. Thomas rode 50 miles, on a fat bike, at ~19mph. Way to go Thomas!

There are a lot more great pictures from the weekend on the BRF Club Facebook page as well as the BRF Off-Road page, if you're not a member, you should be. Yes, that's Thomas leading a 2x2 paceline, on the gravel, on a fat bike.

In addition to our members running the TC 10 mile and TC marathon, BRF Club members Brad Hallett, Tina Olson, Lori Belz, Dave O and Cheryl Barker were out racing for their respective teams this weekend and also had some solid results.

Congrats to everyone that got out and competed this weekend.

Chris Stindt made a last minute decision to race the Filthy 50 and his Race Report is below. Thanks for the story Chris and for getting out and representing! (Did I mention we had free beer from Barley John's this weekend at both races?)

Thanks to these guys, we're back on the road racing map. Thomas just won a podium spot in the Midwest Flyover Series. See below!!!

Here's Thomas's race report from this weekend:

This past weekend was the series finale for the Midwest Flyover Series in Clear Lake, IA.  Thomas Olek aka "The Train" was the lone BRF racer this weekend.  Thomas was going into the race looking for upgrade points as he's currently just shy of his Cat 3 upgrade.

The TT was held during a warm and humid morning on a course slightly up out and slightly down back.  The Train held watts and a lot of them and ended up taking first in the TT.  Unfortunately there are no upgrade points awarded in the TT!  It should be noted that the winner of our BRF TT this year, Jameson Ribbens, was only 3 seconds back of former National Professional TT champion Tom Zirbel in the P-1-2 TT.  So yep we get the best of the best at our own TT!

Later in the day Thomas entered the very technical Crit with many turns and a couple nice kicker hills as part of the course.  Thomas weathered three crashes and ended up slotting into 5th place at the finish.  Unfortunately the Sunday RR was cancelled and Thomas ended up just 2 points short of his Cat 3 upgrade.  He did end up first in General Classification for Cat 4 on the weekend.

Thomas also ended the Midwest Flyover Series in third place for the series in Cat 4.

Congrats on a great weekend Thomas :)

Next  year, these guys will be racing Cat 3 and there is some serious cash on the line for the Flyover Series. We should be seeing some more podium pics with Leader's Jerseys next season! We all better start training for LaCrosse so we can get their season started with lots of support.

Thanks Thomas for kicking as% and thanks Chris S for the reports and organizing this effort.

Thank you to everyone that made the 2016 Bob Barabe Memorial Time Trial a huge success. We had 74 riders join us for a great race on a beautiful Saturday morning. We'll have to check the official archives, but it looks like a new course record was set yesterday as well. Results are posted on the TT Results page and the rest of the pictures will be uploaded to the Photo Gallery shortly.

Thanks again to everyone that helped support the event.

Here's your number 1 and 2🚴🏻🏆 Crit riders for cat 4/5! Great job boys! It must have something to do with those fancy DeFeet International socks that arrived today! Definitely brought the wind to our wheels. These guys won an entire 1/2 lap in front of the peloton! 🔥🔥🔥 on fire.
